LETTER FROM DOLORES

Dear Parent or Guardian:

There has been an additional case of pertussis (whooping cough) at Larchmont Charter School in 5th grade. Your child may have been exposed. We have been in consultation with the County of Los Angeles Public Health Office and want to communicate with you right away.

Pertussis can spread through the air when people cough. It often starts like a common cold which gets worse over 1-2 weeks. People with pertussis have coughing spells that may last several seconds. As they catch their breath at the end of each coughing spell, they may gasp loudly (“whoop”) and vomit or choke.

The vaccine usually protects against pertussis, but sometimes even immunized children and adults can get pertussis. Pertussis is treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics can also prevent the spread of pertussis to others. Please confirm with your physician that your and your child’s pertussis vaccine is up to date.

The Public Health Department is working closely with our school in monitoring all students for additional pertussis cases.

Activities being implemented to help stop the spread of pertussis in school include:

- The exclusion of all confirmed pertussis cases from school until they have taken the first five days of the antibiotic.

- The request that antibiotics be taken by all babies, children, and adults living in households with someone who has pertussis.

If you or your child begin to have a cough in the next 3 weeks, please be seen by your doctor or clinic right away and take this notice with you; also contact Daniel Bellosillo, Public Health Nurse (323) 769-7813 or Acacia Blanc, PHNS, at (323)769-7891. You may also call Dr. Shobita Rajagopalan of the LA County Public Health Department at (323)769-7920 if you have any further questions. If your child has a confirmed case of whooping cough, please notify the school immediately.

Sincerely,

Dolores Patton

Head of School

Thursday HW update

Hi,
There was no HW from us today - there was supposed to be writing, but nobody copied it. Free day! Do your PE exercises and have some fun. (Or maybe research your storm!)
Thanks

Today, students presented their Unit 4 Playground Projects to Dolores, our Head of School. It was great to see them excited to share their work and design ideas.

Our field trip yesterday was a success (all students were returned to parents at the end of the day). One of our biggest fears around field trips is losing students and then having to explain it to the parent, even though this has not happened to us yet. The content presented covered many of the concepts learned in the Water Planet Science Unit. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Griffith Observatory does a nice job providing plenty of staff to keep the kids moving and engaged.

ELA: Writing HW
Due: Friday

Math: HW#6 & 7 (any unfinished classwork from earlier this week too)

We will not be stopping at the gift shop or anywhere the kids will need money. Please leave all money and other valuables at home. We will not eat there because of the weather, but we will eat lunch late when we get back. Please eat a big breakfast so you will last!!

Friday, March 18, 2011

The fifth grade classes would like to thank the Patrick family for purchasing the new lunch bins for all of our lunches. Hopefully those pesky squirrels will keep their sharp teeth away from them! They have been known to chew through plastic to get to those yummy sandwiches and sushi.

ELA: Students should take the opportunity to reread their Newbery book at this time. As book reviewers, they are looking for specific examples and being familiar with the details of the plot, characters, and setting will help students answer the questions for this project.

Math: HW#4 is to finish estimating all of your angles on your Crazy Quilt square, if you do not finish in class. The second thing is to organize the information from HW#1 & HW#2 onto a study guide to present to the class for Monday's Math warm-up.

Science: HW#7

Have a great weekend!

For the Love of Learning

Hi there,
We have a new addition to our team - Matt! He is a student teacher who is finishing up his credentialing process at USC. He will be with us for 10 weeks, and will be teaching many lessons in all our classes. Monday he sent home an "authorization and release" form so that he may record his lessons to work with his professor to improve his teaching. He will be videotaping lessons from time to time to watch himself, not the students. The recordings will not be used for any other purpose besides helping Matt become a better teacher. All student teachers are required to record their lessons, this is part of becoming a teacher. (You should see ours!) If you are uncomfortable signing the form, we will move your child out of view of the camera.
Thanks!

Monday HW 3/7 and other news...

Hi there,
Today for HW they have an ELA sheet called "Cause and Effect: The Apple Picking Trip" and PE. Also, work reports are going home today. If it says "work report" on their work reports, it's because they didn't hand in the previous one. Please be sure to take the time to sign the work report. If there are any mistakes (which happens!), just let us know and we'll fix them. The TAs work so hard to get these work reports done. We really appreciate their diligence.
Happy conference week!
If you still haven't signed up for a conference, please email the teacher to set one up. The sign ups are no longer in the office.
Thanks
