CST testing is now finished! Hooray!!!!
Now, LCS end of year assessments begin.
Homework from now until the end of the year will vary as we wrap up different projects.
Our civics play is our 5th grade signature project and we will use additional class time to prepare for it. Cast members are expected to be off book as soon as possible, so we expect them to work on memorizing lines as part of their homework. Math will focus on concepts relevant to the play. For example, area of stage flats the crew is making, wages of stage actors and crew members, cost of theatre rental and revenue needed to cover expenses, etc. Homework will continue to be review of skills learned this year.
Our last ELA project is wrapping up. Students will be given 1 week to prepare a presentation. Each class will schedule presentations for the last two full weeks of school in June. Presentations signups will take place at the end of next week. Students have learned about the six criteria considered for the Newbery Medal- Theme; Accuracy, Clarity, and Organization; Plot; Setting; Characters; and Style. They have written about each element in class, turned it in, received feedback, and made revisions as necessary. The final product will be a presentation of the information in class.
In writing, our last assignment will be a persuasive essay on a topic that students will choose from science and social studies topics they are learning and debating about in class. Students are learning the art of presenting a strong argument with supporting details and understanding the counterarguments that their audience may have.
So, here is the final stretch of the year! We will celebrate all of our hard work with a wonderful "Stepping Up" celebration at IP, morning sing honoring the fifth graders leaving the Hollygrove campus, and the performance of our civics play, which is a celebration of the amazing collaboration amongst all the members of our fabulous fifth grade team of students, parents, and teachers!
